This session applies Californian Vaquero-style groundwork, as taught by Tom & Bill Dorrance, Ray Hunt, and Buck Brannaman, to prepare horses for therapeutic riding programs. By focusing on six key groundwork exercises, participants will learn to enhance their horse’s feel, balance, and problem-solving abilities—ultimately improving safety and performance in a therapeutic riding setting.
Successfully recruiting and managing volunteers can be one of the most difficult roles in Equine Assisted Services. This presentation will explain how ROCK recovered after COVID when dozens of volunteers chose not to return. We restructured the process of recruiting, training, and welcoming new volunteers. We developed promotional opportunities for current volunteers and created opportunities to engage new volunteers when we found we had too many volunteers.
The neuro-experiential model of treatment focuses on accessing the healing power of our nervous system through lived experiences. When utilized in the context of equine assisted services the neuro-experiential model is a powerful agent of change. This model is both trauma-informed and attachment focused making it applicable to a wide variety of clientele.
10:00 am - 11:00 am
Working as a group, participants will be introduced to experiential reading activities that incorporate horses within the arena. The activities are part of a program called Horse Powered Reading which uses Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association's (EAGALA) model of Equine Assisted Learning (EAL). After completing the activities, participants will have an understanding of experiential learning with the Horse Powered Reading program, and how HPR can benefit their students. With HPR, students see and experience with their entire body, and emotions by creating metaphors for the skills involved in reading.
This session will focus on the basic layout of a mentoring program. It will include some of the steps taken to start up the program and train mentors but focus more heavily on lesson format, activities and organization. There will be examples of resources provided with the hope of making it easier for newer facilities to develop programming more quickly and hopefully allow for some fresh ideas for more seasoned instructors. There will be some open discussions as well to share some of our favorite/most versatile activities for building social skills. The goal is to provide new ideas to take back to our programs that can be utilized to teach social/emotional skills that will promote health and wellbeing in our participants’ daily lives.
Continuation of the session that began at 8:45 am.

Groundwork will help you and your horse build a team. Everything you do will become easier and your horse will be safer to be around. He will be respectful of your personal space and not push on you. He will be more responsive to cues. Groundwork, if done correctly, will build in a safety factor. Finally, the real reason for groundwork is improved performance. It is very important to understand the concept of getting down to your horse’s feet. This means when you pick up on your halter rope or bridle reins, you should be directly connected to your horse’s feet, True softness, roundness, lightness, and responsiveness should transfer directly down to his feet.
This study was undertaken to examine the history Equine Assisted Services (EAS) in Australia, to probe and quantify the types of services offered, and to examine certification opportunities offered within this industry in Australia. It was a further goal to distinguish between differences in terminology used in Australia in comparison to the United States.
